Background/Program Administration & Staff:

Since 1935 the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA) has been a federally-recognized regional tribe, and is one of only two regional tribes in Alaska. CCTHITA compacts with tribal communities that are spread over 43,000 square miles within Southeast Alaska. CCTHITA operates over 50 programs employing over 200 staff with annual operating budget of approximately $24 million. A president and six person executive council govern the tribe. CCTHITA Roads & Transportation has (3) staff members devoted to transportation issuses. Consultants are retained when necessary and as finacially possible. CCTHITA headquarters are located in Juneau, which is located on the mainland of Southeast Alaska. Juneau covers 2,717 square miles of land and 538.3 miles of water.

Improve the transportation systems within Southeast Alaska to assure that they are safe, efficient, economical, fiscally responsible, and addresses the transportation needs of all Southeast Alaska communities in a manner that nurtures cultural and traditional values while providing the greatest economic opportunity to Southeast Alaska Natives.

Southeast Alaska Transportation System:

Access to Juneau is only by air and water.

Surface Transportation:

Marine facilities include seaplane landing areas in the Juneau, deep draft docks, private barge facilities, five boat harbors and a State ferry terminal.

Marine Highway:AMHS Ferry

The Alsaka Marine Highway System (AMHS) and freight barges provide year-round services. Juneau is currently the homeport for most AMHS vessels and crew. CCTHITA Roads is in partnership with Allen Marine, Inc. of Sitka to develop a private/public transportation system in S.E. Alaska.

Air Transportation:

Float Plane

Scheduled jet flights and air taxis are available at the Municipally-owned Juneau International Airport. The airport has an 8,456 runway and a seaplane landing area.

 

 

 

Public Transportation:

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) operates a transit system serving the greater Juneau area.

Coordination with Federal/State/Local governments/Tribes:

"Extensive" FHWA coordination, since CCTHITA Roads Switched to FHWA. "Some" coordination with BIA continues., and "not signifcant" coordination with the State, but efforts continue to develop a stable relationship.

Inventory Management:

CCTHITA Roads has IRR roads & trails inventory in Juneau/Douglas and is pursuing recognition of marine highway miles under the IRR program in S.E. Alaska.
